The surround effect ...

The surround effect was actually Dolby Surround. If you rip the S3Ms from the demo you'll discover the ship sounds are present in two copies - the "normal" one and a phase-shifted one. By lowering the playback volume of one sample while raising the other one you get the effect that the ships are flying from behind you to the front. Like all the best demo effects, simple but very effective.

Thanks for this info about "Kefrens' Desert Dreams". Really seems, that FC was inspired a bit, but did an awesome composing, where Kef "glued" parts together. Those groups where showing how to get most out of those 111011001010100100111s :]

DirectX is not "from scratch". Modern graphic cards+directX make many crucial calculations for you. Old school you coded your own polygon etc fillers from scratch. Your own asm code actually did put every pixel on screen. Inner loops had to be fast. -) Ofcourse effects in demos were precalculated as much as possible. These Future Crew guys worked on some gfx card, after that dont know where they went..

I think games and demo music are the origins of the today's electronic music scene. Growing up in 8 and 16 bits sounds like this... sound channels from 1 to a lot of... After the built in sounds of the Videoton TV computer (in Hungary) the famous C64 and Amiga there are soundcards from Adlib, through Gravis... we allways heard music's like this! It's not a wonder that today we do the same but it's now called electronic trance, dance etc. music

I totally disagree. Music is about art. Art is about expression; expression of emotions and thoughts. Whilst not to take away from Sutherland's monumental skill, it is just that. Skill. I know how easy it is to become totally focused on the technical/mechanical (given its difficulty to master). But "talent" is being able to convey the emotions regardless of how easy or difficult a piece is, and it is in this area that Callas simply blows Sutherland, and many others, into oblivion.

Callas maybe doesn't have impressive vocal abilities like Sutherland, but there is something in her voice that reminds me of Pavarotti. First, she has very distinctive voice. Second, her voice is very enveloping and suggestive. Third, when she sings I have a feeling that the aria is being performed only for me. These qualities are God-given and you can't teach them. Because of that I find these two artists probably the most gifted opera singers. Their voices have phenomenal charisma.

Reading some of these comments I'm not sure if people really understand what this play is. It is NOT a comedy. It is NOT a horror movie. It is between the two, a dark comedy. A part of the comedy is that the bad guy wins and an over the top invasion occurs at the end. It's supposed to be intentionally ridiculous to see giant plants attacking the National Guard and climb a building like King Kong.
